10.4 Chemical Injuries Print E-mail
Written by Enno Striepling

Hazardous substances in the cargo can cause chemical burns. The treatment of chemical burns is very similar to the treatment of other burn injuries. The first aid is decontamination by extensive rinsing with water.  The affected regions of the body should be covered with sterile wound dressing after the decontamination. Gaseous or vaporized substances can induce irritation of eyes, airways and skin. After thorough rinsing with water a symptomatic treatment with an ophthalmic ointment is recommended.

Inhalation trauma is addressed in the next chapter.
