The conglomerate of international conventions in the maritime sector is a complex one, and not easily understood. The chapter is divided in three main parts.

The first subchapter gives an overview of the regulatory framework, starting with the International Law of the Sea, looking at the general characteristics of maritime conventions and highlight the four pillars.

The next subchapter will deal with the different approaches from different international issuing conventions and their main focus.

In the following subchapter we will look at conventions by topic, and see how the different organisations deal with the challenges in different areas.

Removal of wrecks, ship dismantling and recycling will be covered in separate subchapters, as will flag state and port state control and the classification societies.
