Besides being a comprehensive book, the Textbook of Maritime Medicine is also a large website with quite a few functions. This article aims at giving you the basic understanding of how it works and what you can do to participate. To get started please register an account to access all parts of the site.
Accessing the book
In the top menu, click on "Read the book". A large submenu in the left coloum will show, and you may use this to navigate. At the bottom of every subchapter you'll also find a link to start a discussion. Comments and suggestions are most welcome.
Registering a user
To participate and access all functions of the site, you may register a personal user. Registering is free. The reason for asking you to register is that we want to inform you about updates, thus giving you access to the latest version at any time. During the registration process we'll ask a few questions about where you work and which part of the world you are from. If you want to you may also enter your adress, so that we may put you on our Maritime Medicine Network Map.
By registering you become a member of a professional network of maritime physicians all over the world. You can discuss the topics related to the book, while more general discussions preferably could be made at the forum of IMHA (International Maritime Health Association). The network map displays all registered members and give you easy access to the family of maritime medicine.
Starting a Discussion
To start a discussion, either enter the discussion section, or click the "Discuss this article" link at the bottom of a subchapter in the book. Every subchapter has its own discussion category (or discussion thread if you like). When another user responds to your message, you will (optinally) receive a message with a link to the discussion.
Giving Feedback
Updates and feedback on the textbook is most welcome. The easiest way to do this is to start a discussion, so that the authors and users may respond.
Further development depends on the initiative of our readers. Your suggestions are most welcome. Please send us an e-mail, or state your suggestions in the discussion forum.
